A good example of forestation done wrong is the Jewish national fund. They have done a great job planting forests all over Israel and their work is probably still a net positive. BUT, the original directors were all from Europe and planted european trees which look nicer then the native species and reminded them of "home". As Israel is discovering perhaps there's a reason that these trees are not native - they are more prone to wildfires in the much hotter and drier middle eastern climate.
