My problem with ads and social networking buttons is the latency they introduce in to browsing. If a page load hangs, most of the time it turns out to be waiting for a response from a third party web site, which has no relevance to the content I want to see. Since I installed Ghostery I find my browsing experience is much faster. For ads, I use Adblock but I start with an empty URL list. I add servers that host obnoxious ads (animated or over-laying content) to the list as I go about my browsing. As long as a site uses a well-behaving ad network the ads will display.
