I think he should try more stuff that aligns more closely with the original purpose of the device, I.e. programmable mixing and "routing" of fluids. From all the examples with the glass pane, I found those the most interesting. Maybe connect multiple of those devices together with hoses into some kind of "fluidics network", or build a hyper-exact cocktail mixing machine or something similar.
