I'm reading "Tomorrow!" by Philp Wylie, a novel published in 1952 about the preparation (or lack thereof) of the citizens of a fictional Midwestern US city, and the aftermath of nuclear war. Wishful thinking, terror, social climbing, anti-American activities... and bravery, civil defense, common decency. Wealthy owners of mass media don't want the government telling them what to do, so they destroy civil defense efforts. The good old days.
