>you can’t say you like bacon
Not if the subtext is very obviously "...unlike those f**ing Jews/Muslims".
If there's no subtext, nobody will blink.
- 4ndrewl 1y agoSaying anything bacon related in front of the pigs (slang for police) has _always_ been a sure fire way to wind them up and get your collar felt. You're only doing that if you're looking for a scrap.
- tempfile 1y agoBut this is not a free speech issue. I don't think there is anywhere this would not be protected speech.
- 4ndrewl 1y agoThere's a difference between Free Speech - which is a power relation wrt the legislative branch, and freedom of consequences of your speech - which is a power relation wrt the executive.
- tempfile 1y agoBut what does that have to do with your comment? "a sure fire way to wind them up and get your collar felt" is more about being hassled by police, not really what power relation you have to the executive branch of the government. Also it is not really true that "free speech" and "freedom from consequences of your speech" are separate. Protecting free speech literally means protection from consequences, if there are no consequences then there's nothing to protect you from.
- snapcaster 1y agoIncidents like this make me feel better about the US. At least we don't yet have cops arresting people for subtext and fellow citizens defending it

- snapcaster 1y agooi mate, got a license for that snark?
- pydry 1y agoYou have the freedom to racially abuse Muslims in the US but not protest a racism inspired genocide.
