The alternative to police is not that you get to do what you want. The alternative is that people who have fewer rules than the police are the ones who throw you out.
- immibis 1y agoNo, the alternative is whatever we say it is. Presumably something better. You might even call them "police", but to make them better, they'd have to be a brand new system from the ground up with no overlap in personnel or plans.
- AnimalMuppet 1y agoNo, the alternative is whatever we do. We can say it will be unicorns and rainbows, but unless you have a unicorn-and-rainbow factory, saying that won't change the reality that it will be... something else. We might be able to abolish or defund the police. The result won't be paradise, though, it will be Vigilance Committees. (Even "abolish and replace" is, I think, too much of a reach to be actually implemented.)

- AnimalMuppet 1y agoI don't. I just know that there's a lot more to making something actually better than just saying that it's going to be better. But, in fairness, I may have misread how you meant "whatever we say it is". If you meant that we get to make choices that determine the future, I agree. I would just caution that it takes far more effort, persistence, and political capital than you expect in order to make a positive change.
