The way a French friend put it to me when they were learning English through immersion.. I dreamt in English last night! Now I know I can speak the language! Being monolingual, and then trying to pick up another language later in life, a big struggle is not trying to "map" sentences and structure to what one already knows. This is why idioms often don't translate well.
