Will take decades to repair if that’s even possible, lots of reform. I can’t believe the USA could even have a king but here we are.
I wonder if some major states like California will secede eventually .
- Buttons840 1y agoThis gerrymandering debacle does seem to increase political tensions around and between states, especially if it spreads to multiple states and everyone starts gerrymandering, making all states politically binary in their representation. The sides for a succession / civil war become clear. Just yesterday federal agents were in California against the will of the California state government, and gathered outside a building where the governor was speaking, so threats of violence / force are on the table already.
- bamboozled 1y agoIt's basically so incredible that I can't believe Russia and or China wasn't behind this, the dismantling of The Union, it's a Soviet wet dream and it could be happening for real. Amazing.
- Seb-C 1y agoThey have pretty much already won cold war 2, and achieved this by using US capitalism and tech against itself.
- Hikikomori 1y agoIt's not a new thing https://gerrymander.princeton.edu/ https://gerrymander.princeton.edu/
- Buttons840 1y agoGerrymandering is not new, but have states threatened to counter gerrymander each other like this before? Have we seen an escalating tit-for-tat directly between states like this before? Also, Texas politicians are hiding in other states, and politicians in those other states are acknowledging this and trying to harbor them. This is a situation involving violent force, since Texas and the FBI are trying to arrest the Texas politicians who fled. Just states openly aggravating each other in matters of violence. President Trump has also done things like threaten to withhold federal funds and aid from states he does not like. There are multiple examples of this. A state could justly feel that they are not getting any benefit from paying federal taxes if that happens. We're also seeing the US military being deployed on US soil for divisive political reasons, and Trump threatens to do more of this in the future.
- Hikikomori 1y agoNot disagreeing. What Texas is doing and California's response is new, just adding context on what current state of gerrymandering. No idea if it will work, at least some democrat is doing something. But I have a feeling that its a bit late now that they'll have military in the streets of most major democrat cities once they copy what they did in DC. Frankly, anything less than a military coup is unlikely to stop project 2025.
- ImJamal 1y agoThe Supreme Court ruled in 1869 (Texas v. White) that a state cannot secede.
- mthoms 1y agoIf the United States becomes an authoritarian dictatorship then the United States as we know it ceases to exist and all bets are off.
- jacquesm 1y agoIf the Supreme Court wants to have its rulings respected they'll need to ensure that they have buy-in from all parties. Secession would be very messy. But there are borders that some states will not cross and others will, when - and if, and let's hope it does not come to pass - that happens there are lots of things on the table that the Supreme Court can no longer put a stop to. This is why Trump is as dangerous as he is: he doesn't care one bit about how the USA became the superpower that it is, he'll burn it all down for ego and personal gain, no matter what the consequences.
- ben_w 1y agoA state cannot secede* under the laws of the USA. Similarly, under the laws of the Kingdom of Great Britain, the 13 colonies also couldn't secede: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proclamation_of_Rebellion https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proclamation_of_Rebellion Famously, the laws didn't stop those colonies. * T&C apply
