- mrbombastic 1y agoYou don’t get to democratically reject democracy. That is like the first grade class president candidate that promises free ice cream for everyone when they get in office and then they realize that is not in their power. The constitution is above the president and above a single election.
- mathiaspoint 1y agoLike all other public institutions these things only matter insofar as they have buy-in from the public.
- mrbombastic 1y agodo you believe that the majority of Americans support what is happening?
- mathiaspoint 1y agoThe majority of the electorate voted for it and based on the polling data Americans don't think it's being taken far enough. If you can find a pool of people who don't support it and you truly believe it violates the constitution you should campaign for secession. That is ultimately where the power for the constitution comes from after al.
- mrbombastic 1y agoWhat polling data? Most polls have him at average 44% approval and underwater on most topics. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/donald-trump-approval-rating-polls.html?searchResultPosition=3 https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/donald-trump-appro... And more recent polls have his approval in the high 30s.
- kccoder 1y agoA sizable subset of the very slight majority which elected him were conned by an expert conman, again, and very quickly realized their mistake, which is reflected in the polls. People didn’t vote to end democracy, they voted for what a liar promised them, and will be utterly incapable of achieving for them: a lower cost of living. Poor education, both intellectual and emotional, is the root cause, leading to this monster regaining power. No wonder he loves the poorly educated.
- AlecSchueler 1y ago> We have democratically rejected democracy. That sounds like an assurance given by the people in power to make people feel better about losing their freedoms. > That's what most people mean when they say "<x> electorate are not good stewards of democracy." Is it? I can't say I've heard a lot of people using that phrase so I'm surprised you would be able to split it up into what most people do and don't mean by it. The person above meant that the US had traditionally positioned itself as a nation that would fight for things like freedom of expression and the rights of people and enterprise to do their own thing, but that recently they had failed to perform this function for themselves.
