I’m sure it’s far from the most common modality, but this is obviously false. I’ve personally referred people to apply at my company based on their PRs to F/OSS stuff, and at least a couple off the top of my head have been hired.
- scarface_74 1y agoAnd if you are one in one hundred maybe even one in a thousand, would a random developer looking for a job be better off doing open source work and getting hired for one of your few openings or “grinding leetCode”? And “a couple” is statistically so close to zero, it might as well be zero.
- Ancapistani 1y agoAt no point did I suggest that it was a primary means of hiring. It’s certainly not “absolutely no one”, though. > And “a couple” is statistically so close to zero, it might as well be zero. No, it’s three that got hired (me and two others I hired), with a self-selected sample of one. Certainly not statistically significant, but it’s also far from nothing. I wouldn’t recommend anyone grind leetcode. There are plenty of jobs that done’t require it, and IMO those are the ones you likely want anyhow.
- scarface_74 1y agoYes unless you want a job from one of the companies that pay top of market. Who wants $160K+ straight out of school anyway?
