I always use a VPN when on an un-trusted network, even if it's secured (someone could always be listening on the wired portion of the network). Personally, I find "Cloak" (https://www.getcloak.com/ https://www.getcloak.com/) to be a fantastic app that works on my Mac and iOS devices. It's super-simple to get setup and running, and very cheap, too.
