In hindsight, it will be clear, and future generations (if any exist) will ask: "Why didn't you understand what was happening at the time" My answer: Noise. Just because you can find someone who wrote down the answer at the time, doesn't mean that they really understood the answer, at least not to the extent that we will understand with hindsight. Future history is contingent.
