I’m more confused about the difference between KDE and Plasma.
- rstat1 1y agoKDE is a combination of multiple different parts of which Plasma is one (and also the name of the overall organization that produces the whole thing). Plasma is the main component, its main contribution to KDE is the various user facing components like the desktop, the launcher bar, etc.
- 1bpp 1y agoKDE is an organization developing Linux desktop software and Plasma is their window manager
- petepete 1y agoBut I thought kwin was the window manager. And that the DE in KDE stands for Desktop Environment, so it's weird that it's actually an organisation.
- ryanhecht 1y agoApparently they "retired the expansion" of the initialism in 2009: https://dot.kde.org/2009/11/24/repositioning-kde-brand/ https://dot.kde.org/2009/11/24/repositioning-kde-brand/
- petepete 1y agoTotally missed that - makes sense, thanks! I assumed Plasma was a rebranding so was surprised to see KDE making a comeback.
