- Aurornis 1y agoI don’t think the comment was judging, I think it was pointing out that this HN post was title very generically about “young people” but upon reading it you see it’s actually about a very niche group of people who share some unique interests.
- CursedSilicon 1y agoI could've opened the post better, but the "culture shock" came from a project I've been working on for nearly a year. So that's where the throughline of thought started. I'm definitely biased in my own feelings of "what we lost" since the internet I grew up on was the "queer kid in the 90's in a small town at the edge of the Earth". A lot of folks probably didn't have that same kind of "problem" that myself and (many) others did. The internet wasn't an escape to a world of folks like them because the people "like them" were just everywhere already It's easy to write off furries or retro tech or other things as "niche" but the reality is that folks like that have always existed, and our need for connection was (and is) as real as anyone else. The internet of the time was where we found that community, where we found one another

So that's where the throughline of thought started Yes, that’s my point: Your culture shock is rooted in a very hyper-niche internet bubble. Yet the title of your HN submission was about “young people” and you keep talking about a generation of young internet users, while very obviously missing how the majority of young people or even young tech-focused people interact with the internet. You’re writing about a very, very niche corner of the internet but presenting it as if it’s a generalization for everyone.
- deadbabe 1y agoI truly never understood furries. Are they like trans-species people? Who would prefer to be a sentient animal than a human if they could? Or do they just like animal characters?
