This is an AI writing tell: "It's not just x—it's y."

- kstrauser 1y agoI loathe every cheap throwaway comment like this. Know who else uses punctuation? People who write. In fact, that's where the AI got the idea.
- degamad 1y agoIt's an AI writing tell that was copied from so many of us who use it.
- rendall 1y agoLiterally no one use that construction with an em dash unless they are using AI to write their copy.
- devanshuarora 1y agoTo be fair, “not just X—it’s Y” showed up in product marketing way before AI started parroting it. Just saying. :)
- rendall 1y agoIndeed. Marketers took the time to find the key combo that places an em dash. No one else does that. Except AI. It’s not just a typographic choice—it’s a tell!
- dragonwriter 1y ago> Marketers took the time to find the key combo that places an em dash. No one else does that. Pretty much everything that is professionally published does, and lots of people who care about typography do, that.
- ben_w 1y agoFalse: I do that. Not even in marketing. "Use smart quotes and dashes" is even one of the options on the MacOS keyboard input sources settings.
