I was surprised recently to see that gemini-cli[0] and codex[1] each have way more GitHub stars than Claude Code[3]. Currently 62k, 31k, and 25k respectively.

I was surprised recently to see that gemini-cli[0] and codex[1] each have way more GitHub stars than Claude Code[3]. Currently 62k, 31k, and 25k respectively.
Stars are only a proxy for use, of course, but I'm not sure what a closer public indicator might be.

- bluelightning2k 1y agoThat indeed is very surprising. I guess they're larger companies (even getting their own engineers to star in Google's case is a pretty big deal). From HN conversations I'd have said Claude Code was 90%+ of the market by what I remember seeing.
- mattmanser 1y agoIt is on YouTube and Reddit too, having done a bit of a dive into it last weekend. Clause code massively dominates the AI agentic coding space at the moment.
- Volundr 1y agoBoth Gemini CLI and Codex are open source, with the actual code in the repo, so that could be the difference.
- neuronexmachina 1y agoYup. Claude Code's repo is basically just an issue tracker.
