If I think of self-taught engineers who are my peers, they look great. But that’s selection bias. If I think of every self-taught engineer that I’ve ever crossed paths with, there are some that engaged in unscientific magical thinking. Also (solely) self-teaching seems to achieve good results in software more frequently than in other fields of engineering.
