As a new parent, it’s money. Daycare costs $400 USD per week in my area, from 7am-6pm, 5 days a week.
So for one child that is roughly 20,000 USD annually.
Once you hit the 3-5 kid mark, it usually does not make sense for the spouse to work, unless they are earning well above 6 figures.
So then you’re going down to one income supporting a family of 3-5. That’s risky for a variety of reasons.
If you want actual actions congress can take:
1. Expand limits on the dependent HSA account to allow more than 5,000 annually. Daycare alone is much more than 5,000 USD, it seems making that completely tax free will help.
2. Subsidize the entire cost of daycare. This will never happen but by golly it will work.

- floren 1y agoHow fast are you popping out those kids to have more than 2 children in daycare rather than free public school?
- Tadpole9181 1y agoI mean, kids start school at around 6 in the US. So one every 2 years. That's not uncommon for people who want families? Most of the folk my age with 3 kids had them within 3 or 4 years?
- SamuelAdams 1y agoAnd it assumes you do not have twins or triplets.
- bethekidyouwant 1y agoWe have a subsidized childcare in Quebec and the fertility rate is still shit
- MangoToupe 1y agoMy understanding is the cost of housing is increasing far faster than inflation in the entire anglosphere.
- MisterSandman 1y agoQuebec housing is not affordable by any means, but still much more affordable than the rest of Canada. Especially when you look at cities like Montreal and compare it to other cities like Toronto. It’s not just affordability, it’s one big piece but it’s not the only thing.
- missedthecue 1y agoThere are a number of countries we can observe where housing has gotten cheaper over the last 10 years. For example, the income to housing ratio in Germany is 18% more favorable in 2024 than in 2014, yet TFR is quite lower and continues to drop.
