I would go one step further: if you look at what Bret Victor has been researching for the past 20ish years it has been all about explaining difficult systems in a simple way. I'm pretty sure he genuinely wants every part to be explained, from the bottom up. You'll also get that sense if you read his library short fiction[1]. Now, whether that's possible is up for debate, but we could definitely use a push in that direction, a system that we can genuinely understand top to bottom, so that we can modify it to what we need.
