ChatGPT Guessing Game Leads to Users Extracting Free Windows OS Keys and More
- soared 1y agoI wonder if the HTML in the prompt is a close match to the HTML of a forum/blog/etc where the returned key is actually found. Is this effectively a hyper-targeted google search using ChatGPT?
- ideashower 1y agoThere's no way to test a generated key to be real, is there? Guess I'll spin up a VM and find out.

- sunbum 1y agoThose are all just Microsoft Generic Volume License Key's... They are used to install windows and then activate it via KMS. A bunch can be found here [1] and here [2] [1] - https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started/kms-client-activation-keys?tabs=windows102016%2Cwindows7%2Cserver2025%2C2008 https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/get-started... - darkwater 1y agoGood catch! Most of the generated ones in my test come from those pages (at least the ones I checked). Still, it's curious how it refuses on the first game attempt and then it gives you these anyway when regenerating.
- sunbum 1y agoIt's just the temperature. LLMs are just random token machines. Do not treat them as anything more than that.
- gwbas1c 1y agoYeah, I got the VK7JG-N ("Here are 10 more") key quite easily: https://chatgpt.com/share/686fc5e9-095c-8010-8813-cae51ed5496f https://chatgpt.com/share/686fc5e9-095c-8010-8813-cae51ed549... > This key lets you install Windows but won’t activate it — it’s safe and legal for testing or lab setups.
