  Imagine what would happen if Uber never ran at a loss. It wouldn't have been able to grow into what it is now. Losing money in the short term can bring long term wins.

    Way to completely dodge the question. The question was not "Why should we allow the public services to run at a loss in the short term?" The question is: Why should public services aim to produce profit?

      I interpreted your question to be why I thought they should focus on long term profit instead of short term profit. As to your question it is for efficiently allocating resources.
