  There was a settlement with the Hito family in 2020 that gave them back control of the land the hotel is on, so it's probably kosher to stay there these days.

    I can't find any info on that, where did you hear that? I was there in 2018, so after the Hito family occupied the hotel and were forceably removed in 2011. Apparently the Chile Supreme Court upheld the hotel's ownership of that land.

      Heard it from my MIL, who is from rapa nui and likes to fill me in on all the local happenings. I tried searching and I can't find much online (but I don't speak Spanish), but I do see on the resort site, the about page has an "our family" section about the Hitos: https://nayarahangaroa.com/about/ https://nayarahangaroa.com/about/ Not proof positive but indicative of there not being bad blood anymore there

    It was probably called 12 different names over the eons, so why does it matter so much what we call it now? More English speaking people know what Easter Island is. So the woke part is where they confuse the majority of the audience on purpose in service of a political point. I hope that helps! <3
