DeepSeek app faces ban in Germany for illegal transfer of user data
- c0nstantien 1y ago[dead]
- dmix 1y agoThis is a relatively new thing. Apple only recently started listening to EU about banning stuff from app stores on the request of EU states. AFAIK Italy banning Deepseek in January 2025 was the first and only time which Apple blanket banned a service from app stores under GDPR (as opposed to DSA).
- silvanocerza 1y agoItaly banned ChatGPT too when it came out for the same reason, then they agreed to add a disclaimer and call it a day.

- sunaookami 1y agoSo when will US companies be banned for the illegal transfer of data? Especially Microsoft in the government and schools which was already ruled illegal but Office, Teams, etc. are still used.
- madduci 1y agoExactly my thought. What about all the social media apps then? Meta as #1 enemy in this case
- thowerjro32432 1y agoWait, if the inference server-farm is in China, then obv. the data will go to China, no ?
- Jon_Lowtek 1y agoTransferring data to non-eu countries is not by itself a violation, if there are provisions in place to ensure that the basic human rights concerning data privacy of european citizens are respected. The actual problem is that those are missing.
- vachina 1y agoThere are probably other more valuable avenues for siphoning training data, EU users is not one.
- eviks 1y agoCould the bureaucrats be satiated with a 20-page risk warning signed with user's digital finger blood instead?
- singularity2001 1y agoCan they transfer any user data when I don't give them permission or is it just about the chat conversation which obviously they transfer??
- dotps1 1y agoThey transfer all your data passively by using 45 year old encryption with known IVs so it’s easy for the CCP firewall to siphon it all. They just have to pretend they didn’t know what they did and it’s legal. The only way to not leak your data is to run it locally.
- singularity2001 1y agoThanks leaking the two discussions I had is a completely different ballpark then uploading all my contact list which other Chinese apps did before
- DonnyV 1y agoThis is coming from the US. They're just using Germany as their proxy to go after China. This whole mess with tying ourselves to Israel has revealed a lot of the countries that just act like proxies for US policies. When its coming from the US, that means its coming from the corporations that control the US. So this is actually coming from US companies doing AI trying to minimize China's AI.
