>deployment This is what Bell Labs mastered,the D in R&D was not the vague term "development" I'm guessing the venture builders (what Eric Schmidt might deride as glue people) bit might stand in for the missing parts of Bell Labs that they cannot recreate (the essential "culture"* needed to offset otherwise inevitable academic/technical/ops silos) *Tacit skills & outlooks passed down between, uh, generations of "program managers" (I can't recall the BL term for those guys who are themselves technical people, but that would be the closest real world equivalent today)?
