And dealing with the litany of different ways folks have done icons, text, and even just drawing lines onto the screen? That's where you run into a lot of trouble.

Right, it's much easier to also re-engineer all of X11 into Wayland at the same time :).

  The whole point of Wayland is to not include all of X11. There's a lot of X11 that's just obsolete cruft, like the entire drawing model
