It shocks me that there's people who still believe this. Suggesting regulations encourage otherwise moral businesses to be unethical is extreme propaganda. Just because someone finds a loophole in a regulation does not mean the alternative (everyone can do whatever they want and God will sort 'em out) would be better.
We have fire codes, which are regulations, because building fires were relatively common and often catastrophic in the 19th century. Did that lead to more house fires?
- jongjong 1y agoIt's not that regulation makes moral businesses unethical. It prevents businesses (moral or immoral) from entering the market in the first place because complying with regulations is too costly. It creates a moat for incumbents which gives them more leeway to harm the consumer (they don't have to compete on the basis of morality as there aren't enough alternatives for consumers to be picky about such things). Regulations often act as a cover, a substitute for ethical conduct. How many corporate cases never make it to court? End up in corporate-friendly arbitration instead? If any case against them comes to court, they will be sure to bring out their list of ISO certifications as legal cover.
