Why not ask the actual crew? Just watched this last week about the USS Oregon, and the crew were asked their favourite sub movies... https://youtu.be/YeVsxF-M

I watched and the cultural references seemed pretty limited compared to TFA. I didn't hear Das Boot even mentioned...

I would not be surprised if the average US submariner is not exactly the kind of person who would seek out german anti-war movies about submarines. I mean, us as IT people ... how many of us have even heard of Dhunki, an 2019 Indian movie about morals and suffering in an Bangalore IT company?

I would bet the average U.S. submariner wasn't even born when "Das Boot" was released in 1981 — 44 years ago.

Age of a movie is not an indication of it being known by younger audiences. Star Wars is 46 years old, and virtually everyone knows it.

I'm not an IT person and I'd never heard of "Dhunki" until your comment. Turns out it's on Prime Video: https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/search?phrase=Dhunki&k=Dhunki&ref=atv_rs_redirect https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/search?phrase=Dhunki&k=Dhunk... https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07WJ34ZC5/ref=atv_sr_fle_c_sr4e8ffb_1_1_1?sr=1-1&pageTypeIdSource=ASIN&pageTypeId=B07WH13293&qid=1750599338631 https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07WJ34ZC5/ref=atv_sr... I'm watching it tonight! Thank you for the tip.

Sigh. The curse of the acronym. I have to look up what TFA stands for. At least I didn't waste fellow HN peeps' time by commenting "What does TFA mean?" I will never understand why someone would take more time to post a comment like that than it would take to Google it....

Turns out I'm not the only one! Here's a spirited discussion on HN from 2019 in which a number of commenters note they have no clue what it means, or else have had it wrong all along: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19781756 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19781756

tbf i only started using it the other day after i googled it myself (though I dimly remembered it from the past). I've normally used OP (as in Original Post) but that can get confused with Original Poster (and the initial comment rather than the featured article). TFA is more specific and now that I've learned it I think its valid to use on a board where it is likely to be a regular useful shortcut.

It was widely used on slashdot, I just assume that people who use this Three Letter Acronym (TLA) are also /. refugees
