Have you ever been in the Stata Center? I think it is a really interesting place. Sure, they had a dispute over some leaks, but that shouldn't overshadow the building itself.
- rwmj 14y agoIt looks horrible. I've not been inside it, just viewed it from the street, so I've no idea about how serious the leaks are.
- polynomial 14y agoThe leaks were eventually fixed, and from the inside it's nothing remarkable, although it is a cut above more soulless institutional architecture.
- Turing_Machine 14y agoI've been near it, but haven't been inside. It's a very cool looking building, but "doesn't leak" still wins for me. Architecture is a demanding discipline in that your work of art also has to be a usable, practical structure. If it isn't, you've failed, IMO. If you're going for artistic value alone, you should stick to sculpture.
- jarek 14y agoYou do realize Gehry has designed plenty of buildings that don't leak, right? His track record on leaking water after construction is probably better than Facebook's track record on leaking personal information after privacy setting changes.
- amalcon 14y agoFrom what I gather, it's also just a poor building in which to have an office. There are not a lot of right-angle corners, which makes furniture take up more space than it otherwise would.
- snogglethorpe 14y agoBut not-a-lot-of-right-angle-corners also makes it interesting, and well, cool. I think a little bit of impracticability in furniture placement is a perfectly reasonable price to pay for that. [Want to work in a castle? Awesome! But you've got to put up with cold stone floors in the wintertime. Throw down some more rugs] I'll take cool and interesting over the usual banal office-park architecture (aka "mcdonald's architecture") any day one usually sees in SV...
- champion 14y agoI think the outside is really interesting but inside is cold & cavernous. Which actually fits well with the MIT style, but not very warm or inviting.
- FrojoS 14y agoCool from the outside. But a shitty place to work and learn. Only the New Media Lab is worse: all glass, zero privacy. Form should follow function. Especially for something that will last unchanged for decades.
