Do computer screens flicker and release this bad light?
- igor47 1y agoIn the article they rank some smartphones by how much they flicker for dimming, I assume it's the same when computer screens dim?
- codethief 1y agoSome do, some don't. Sites like notebookcheck.net typically mention in their reviews whether a given laptop screen exhibits PWM.
- layer8 1y agoYes, Notebookcheck regularly measures PWM in displays: https://www.notebookcheck.net/PWM-Ranking-Notebooks-Smartphones-and-Tablets-with-PWM.163979.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/PWM-Ranking-Notebooks-Smartpho... For OLED I remember reading that PWM dimming is necessary because DC dimming causes shifts in color/whitepoint.
- leakycap 1y agoYes-many do. It's difficult for PWM-sensitive Mac users right now, as the majority of Apple devices for years have had rough PWM and of course there is no hardware alternative. I'm stuck on a MacBook from years ago because the only current MacBook I can buy is the Air line, which I'll probably buy soon to replace my aging 2018 MacBook. No currently for sale iPhone is PWM-free. The iPhone 11 (non-Pro) was the last mainstream device Apple made with a PWM-free backlight. The SE 3 (2022) was also PWM-free, but is no longer available from Apple beyond what stock is still around.
