I'm about 50/50 with rental cars working with CarPlay easily (ie, the pairing dialogs pop up and run without issue). But, when the pairing fails, I just don't bother. There's nothing on CarPlay that is 100% necessary to use a rental. Yeah, it's nice to have. But, I'd rather do without than waste a few hours trying to configure it on a car I don't own.
