Actually, I think that it might point to the widespread availability of semi-automatic firearms.

I can guarantee you that bullying was around before 1966. I have a very clear memory of sitting on a bully's back during the cold weather on 1960-1961 getting some revenge.

Sure, but it wasn't nearly as prevalent, exposure was limited, and the school's zero tolerance policies towards violence back then wouldn't get you (the victim) immediately expelled when that bully and his many friends lied. You also didn't have all the other torturous exposures.
