I have a question. In what sense is OpenAI going to assist UAE in building large-scale data centers suitable to machine learning workloads? Do they have experience and expertise doing that?
- fakedang 1y agoThe UAE already host AWS and Azure datacenters. G42, the semi governmental company which Open AI has tied up with, has a shit ton of imported expertise in the space. They have even developed their own LLM.
- jeffbee 1y agoRight. This is my point. What is OpenAI bringing to this deal?
- fakedang 1y agoLocally hosting models. For one, bringing down costs for local usage. Open AI could then charge prices regionally for their APIs, at a discount even - further incentivizing more companies to set up in the country. There's already been a lot of speculative announcement of ChatGPT being offered to all residents in the country for free. Obviously, the big draw here is for the government to get yet another channel to monitor their citizens and residents.
- Havoc 1y agoExpertise can be bought. Think few could resist an offer of 10x current comp or whatever. If you look at the other insane shit happening in Middle East like The Line etc it’s clear that it won’t be an obstacle
