"Science is supposed to challenge this type of quasi-mystical subjective experience, to provide an antidote to it." That is where the author lost me. Science is supposed to challenge beliefs, not personal experience. It's the difference between "I feel great today" and "four people complimented my new haircut today". Science still allows you to revel in beauty when looking at a temple, even while there may be a sound explanation for why you're having these feelings.
