It's so disappointing from IEEE to be arguing against user's freedom to own their devices. Supply chain attacks concerns are infinitesimally smaller than manufacturers writing buggy, unmaintained software / firmware. We should instead argue for open software / firmware, or at least local control only (if desired). Also solves the problem of billions of e-waste devices whenever manufacturers go under or shutdown their servers, or moves them behind new paywalls / adwalls.
