Hey HN,
I love exploring new places, whether that’s a weekend trip, a bike ride, or a night of stargazing. But I always felt frustrated with common map apps—they’re great for directions, but not for showing the things I actually care about.
I often found myself jumping between different apps for different purposes - even tho they share similar maps. Each has a different design/UX or annoying ads and personally I just don't like that. So for example one app for gas prices, another for public restrooms, a third for camper sites and yet another ones for weather, rain radar, or light pollution (for night photography).
So I decided to build my own map app:
With Umkreisel, you can combine any background map (like satellite, topographic, or cycling) with real-time data layers—like rain radar & clouds, wind speed, UV index, air quality, pollen, Saharan dust, realtime traffic, temperature, bathing water quality, wave height, light pollution, aurora forecast, day/night overlay and more.
You also get 100+ categories of useful points of interest—from public toilets and showers to playgrounds, bike repair stations, free WiFi, farm shops, and even defibrillators.
It’s been a really interesting journey building this (and I’ve learned a ton along the way). I’d love to hear your feedback—whether you’re a camper, cyclist, photographer, or just someone who wants better, more useful maps.
