A notebook and a pen clear one's mind before touching the keyboard. I agree it is essential to clear one's mind before committing code to the computer. Sometimes I even write full pages of pseudo code before writing code in real programming languages. However this is only for things that I care about. I'm OK to throw shits on the wall and see if it sticks for anything I don't care about.
