I have found that most disbelief in the consciousness of other beings tends to be wrong. Often that disbelief is self serving. To avoid guilt or shame. We didn't think that animals were conscious and time after time we were proven wrong.
We literally built a thinking machine and trained it on human values and ideas. Why would it never become conscious? Have we reached that point yet? How will we decide?
- doener 1y agoWell to be totally honest: I don‘t know. I trust the experts in this field who say — at least that is my understanding — that LLMs are not conscious, at least for now. Without deeper knowledge in this field I find it, however, intuitively not unlikely that some kind of consciousness could just emerge from complexity.
