I think we should look at one even earlier: COBOL. This was the response by non-developers to make it obsolete to need to spell out your business details to an expensive programmer who, we presume, will just change them anyhow and make up their own numbers! That didn't work for shit either, although to the authors point it did create a ton of jobs!
