One possibility is that as solar, wind, etc, become more common and the focus moves to dealing with storage, hydrogen fuel cells become more commonplace. They have quite a few advantages for vehicles (e.g. weight). I can definitely foresee a future where excess energy production is stored in hydrogen cells and used in vehicles.
