It is just foolish to think that electing a new figurehead will change everything. USA always has been and is at least for now, a nation of laws and institutions. Trump could only have managed to do all that he has done, with deep political and self institutional support. And the discourse is America has been growing increasingly selfish. Look at the way American exceptionalism has evolved so quickly under Trump. I always took the American exceptionalism talk to be internally focused and meant to motivate Americans to do better. That now sounds like every other country is robbing us, we are being exploited, and we will make drug prices, for example, shoot up everywhere so that they can be lowered in the US. Even if you are not a nationalist for your own country, that has to sound to you at some level as exceptionally repulsive. USA has not shied away from promoting their own interests over others, but now thankfully the actions match the rhetoric.
