- alephnerd 1y agoRural Canada was fairly poor back in the day, but being poor doesn't mean you are gullible or some "aw shucks" ingnoramus. For someone with a partial high school education an Oil job was the only job that would afford them the kind of salary a UT or McGill grad could demand in Toronto or Montreal back in the day. As such, attacking the ONG industry feels like an attack on livelihoods for a lot of people. If you turn a culture war into a class war, us liberals and progressives cannot win.

- Maxatar 1y agoAlberta has been particularly hit hard by the opioid crisis.
- AlexandrB 1y ago> Either way their victim complex is preyed upon by an industry that has been working to undermine Canadian unity for decades. I thought we were taking about Alberta, not Quebec.

- mmooss 1y agoI don't hate them or anyone.
- gruez 1y ago>Bull. The right gets angry no matter what. They always have a reason, even if it has to be fabricated. It's Friday? The right must be outraged. That's funny because if you ask the right, they'll probably say the same thing about the left. How do you adjudicate this?
- TimorousBestie 1y agoDoes it take any great adjudication? I talk to conservatives in my real life. I talk to socialists in my real life. I can tell who among them are angry about real things and who are angry about things they imagined or read someone else fantasize about. You can do the same.
- gruez 1y ago>I can tell who among them are angry about real things and who are angry about things You only need to go to /r/all to see all the things that liberals are angry about. >they imagined or read someone else fantasize about. That just moves the issue from "whether people are angry" to "whether the issues are 'real' or not". If you're a liberal, of course you're going to think liberal causes are "real things" and dismiss conservative issues as "imagined".

- dang 1y agoPlease don't perpetuate regional flamewar, or any flamewar, on HN. It just makes things worse. (Your comment would be fine without that first bit.) https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- Teever 1y agoIt's also worth mentioning the influence of insular religious groups in Alberta. Hutterites, Mennonites, Doukhobors, and Mormons moved to Alberta to escape oppression/oversight and their presence has had a lasting impact on the culture and political structure of Alberta.

- dang 1y agoPlease don't do regional flamewar on HN, such as putting down populations. Like national flamewar and religious flamewar, it's a circle of hell we want to avoid here. You can make your substantive points without it, so please do that instead. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
