I pay for OpenAI Pro but this is a clear no for me. I just don't get enough value out of Gemini to justify a bump from $20 / month to $250.
If they really want to win they should undercut OpenAI and convince people to switch. For $100 / month I'd downgrade my OpenAI Pro subscription and switch to Gemini Ultra.
- radicality 1y agoIt does look like it comes with a few other perks that would normally cost a bunch too, specifically, 30TB of Google drive storage
- airstrike 1y agoYeah, no, thanks for the cross-sell but I'm not interested.
- jameslk 1y agoIt’s the modern day Comcast Triple Play: internet, cable, and phone
- philistine 1y agoExcept Comcast didn't have a reputation for shutting down services left and right. How much are you willing to bet that one of those services in that bundle is discontinued within a year?
- tmpz22 1y agoYou're coming awfully close to defending Comcast haha. GP's point is more that they're Comcast-like, director level incentives have become the primary focus of the company such that they will ram down dark patterns for short term profit at the cost of long term growth and product excellence - just as Comcast has done for the last two decades. Throwing the baby out with the bathwater, Google crumbles but a few more vacation homes get purchased and a larger inheritance is built up for the iPad-kid progeny of the Google management class.
- croes 1y agoDoesn’t matter if you have no use for these 30TB
- J_Shelby_J 1y agoIf they really want to win, they should make a competitor for O1-pro. It’s worth $200 to reduce LLM babysitting needs by %10.
- mvdtnz 1y agoPerhaps they're not interested in beating OpenAI in the business of selling $1 for $0.50.
- CSMastermind 1y agoSure but failure to capture marketshare now could easily snowball into larger failure of the business later.
- lnenad 1y agoThis isn't some 30 people startup. Google's revenue from other sources will easily keep them running and building on top of these products with close to zero chance of failing no matter what happens with AI in the next decade.
- crowbahr 1y agoI mean OpenAI already loses money on their Pro line. So it's less selling $1 for $0.50 and more selling $1 for $0.25 because the guy down the street sells it for $0.50
