I prefer nihilism. Life is not good or bad, it just exists for no particular reason. Suffering and happiness are just signals in the nervous system, part of the information system that keeps a complex organism operating. There's no "morality" that requires that all life be destroyed, we can carry on living if we please.
- incompatible 1y agoA lot of things have been done in the name of "morality" that I find deeply unpleasant. Wiping out all life is just a particularly extreme example.
- chneu 1y agoMorality is a race to the bottom. It can be used to justify almost anything. Morals change depending on perspective.
- BLKNSLVR 1y agoThe more I think deeply about existence, the more it approaches nihilism. If I had a blog it would be called "Approaching Nihilism". Nihilism is the asymptote of philosophy.
- greatquux 1y agoAh, classic nihilism. I first encountered it in high-school literature class reading Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons". Good times. (Of course now you'd probably get a quick TikTok explanation and that's all.) I probably mix in a bit of that, a bit of "apatheism", some epicureanism (the original version), and a dash of solipsism (just a dash mind you), and I find myself pretty comfortable. Going to lots of jam band concerts helps too.
- mensetmanusman 1y ago‘It just exists for no reason’ is a boring axiom.
- EnergyAmy 1y agoTruth is often boring
- mensetmanusman 1y agoDepends on if you have a free will.
- EnergyAmy 1y ago"Free will" is just a vague and unhelpful way of saying "unpredictability". Too many words have been spilled over such a trivial concept. At any rate, sometimes you might find something boring or offensive, while it remains true regardless. This is one of those times.
- mensetmanusman 1y agoDice don’t have free will, not candle flames as your axiom would read. You might be wrong! :)
- EnergyAmy 1y agoWhy don't they?
- mrguyorama 1y agoSure physics and the universe are uncaring and have no opinions, but that puts us in a very priviledged position. Morality is a human invention. We can make it whatever we want. So we better make it fucking good. Care about strangers. Love the unloved. Help the helpless. Work to fix hard problems. Make things better, even if you do it in an inefficient way.
- incompatible 1y agoThis is about deciding for ourselves how we want to live. Evidently, people have different ideas about what sort of society they want. I think it would be best if different communities were permitted to find their own way, with their own systems and rules, instead of trying to impose a "morality" on others. It just turns things into a zero-sum game of power and control, and we know how that turns out.
