I'm pretty sure Google knows what they're doing regarding addiction. They have all the engagement metrics and train their AI to optimize for that. Maybe this doesn't correlate to a satisfying user experience though. For me, the biggest drop in quality was when they stopped showing the dislike counts. I know there's a Chrome plugin that works as a substitute, not sure if it's good.
