Regarding Nike and foot sizes specifically, rather than your general point: they do sell and ship shoes directly to consumers online, so yeah they’d have foot size info in that case, even if (as I hope) they don’t get that info from indirect purchases.
- sensanaty 1y agoWell sure, but it's one thing to have a flow like - Go to nike.com - Select shoe, select size - Order - Shoe size data is only used for this 1 purchase and never stored or used again unless the user buys another pair of shoes And to have a flow like - Go to nike.com - Select shoe, select size - Order - Nike stores this shoe size entered, tied to a identity token that is used to track you on repeat visits and across different domains, sells your shoe size (alongside all your other data they have collected like address) to data brokers, who themselves go on to sell shoe sizes to advertisers. You then get ads like "Have freaky long toes, live in City X and are size 49? Buy FreakShoes.com!" while viewing random Youtube videos about your favorite video game or whatever - Above process repeats for all of eternity The depressing part is that the 2nd flow isn't even that far off of what's really happening. As I was writing I was thinking "Am I making this too dramatic?" But no, this is literally how things happen right now!
