Computer were invented at a lab funded by the military for applied math, with some guys showing up to run mystery calculations over night when the scientists hired to the project were gone.
- mrkeen 1y agoWhy didn't they get their usual 9-5ers to do the job? Why bother getting the guy who'd published the computing paper in academia in 1936 to come work at Bletchley in 1937?
- zmgsabst 1y agoI was responding to the person above me who said: > not investment strategy > highest levels of transparency Your comment makes my point, again: Computers only happened when academics transitioned to programs with investment plans to accomplish a goal — steeped in secrecy. Before that, it was just thought experiments. Both at Bletchley park (for some innovations) and the naval lab for general purpose computers.
