E-bikes make your city smaller
- dredmorbius 1y agoMattSayar: You might want to let up on your blog submissions, as you'll run afoul of HN self-promotion guidelines: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37756086 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=37756086>
- MattSayar 1y agoWell shoot, thanks for the heads up. What made you aware of this?
- dredmorbius 1y agoI checked both your submissions and submission history for your site. HN makes this trivial.
- dredmorbius 1y agoNB, searching for comments by dang (or other HN mods: sctb, as of a few weeks ago tomhow), and "self promotion" should help flesh out guidelines. Some is OK. Mostly is not. You'll get dinged by flags, or automatically through software, eventually. <https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&query=by%3Adang%20Please%20don%27t%20use%20HN%20primarily%20for%20promotion&sort=byPopularity&type=comment https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=true&que...> Software: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38779156 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38779156> I post my own stuff occasionally, sometimes it even gets put into the 2nd chance pool ("pool" here: <https://news.ycombinator.com/lists https://news.ycombinator.com/lists>), without my asking. But I don't abuse the privilege.
- MattSayar 1y agoFair enough. I don't want to come off as A Problem so I'll try to post non-me stuff more. I'm trying to follow "POSSE" principles[0] but I keep hitting this "no self-promotion" wall. Not just here, but on reddit and other sites. I'm not trying to promote anything, I just want to own my content and share it. I don't have ads on my site. I'm not a shill. I just want to write about bikes. I get mixed messaging between the hacker spirit of doing and sharing things, but be careful how much you talk about it. It's a little dispiriting and makes me less excited about sharing my work. OK rant over. Fun note: I just noticed you're so close to having a beautiful round number of upvotes here (65535) [0] https://indieweb.org/POSSE https://indieweb.org/POSSE
- dredmorbius 1y ago"Less than half" is a good guideline, and I'd stick well below that. You can promote your own work. But that should be within a context of actual engagement with HN: "your self-posts shouldn't be even close to 50% of what you're doing here" <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41250511 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41250511>. (Dang's one of the mods.) Traction's hard, I feel you. Give it time and write good stuff.
