Fossil fuel companies actively lobby against renewables and environmental regulation because it's in their financial best interest. By investing in those companies, one aligns their personal financial interests with the industry. I don't think blanket divestment is a good solution, but there is clearly a perverse incentive. You don't get to profit significantly from these companies while being absolved of blame.
