- jasonlotito 1y agoSo... not that it really matters I imagine, but JetBrains doesn't do pure subscription. Rather, you buy your IDEs, and effectively have a perpetual license to the product you bought. You get free upgrades, and if you keep paying, your license gets updated along with it. If you don't continue paying, you still have the IDE you paid for. You just don't get updates. This seems like a subtle distinction, but I think it's an important one in the world of subscription services. https://sales.jetbrains.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207240845-What-is-a-perpetual-fallback-license https://sales.jetbrains.com/hc/en-gb/articles/207240845-What...
- inetknght 1y agoSo it's like what software licenses were 20 years ago. That's a good thing.
- FpUser 1y agoYep. Having perpetual license is precondition for me buying major development tools.
- dismalaf 1y agoJetBrains does have a subscription option, including a monthly subscription to get all their tools.
- int_19h 1y agoThe yearly subscription includes the "perpetual fallback" license GP is talking about. With monthly, you get that once you've been subscribed for 12 months.
- mdaniel 1y agoAnd I recognize that I'm biased as a JetBrains fanboy, but I think it is just a stellar deal to pay $173/year for the all-you-can-eat pack where you get to keep them if you stop paying I know folks are going to call out that the entry price is $289/year, but I still think for the number of included products that's still a deal
- GreenWatermelon 1y agoI just wish they offered "3rd world economy" prices for those of us not living in rich countries. I would even be totally ok with providing my National ID card to prevent fraud, just like with Hetzner. The all products pack costs an entire (software developer) month's salary where I live.
- mdaniel 1y agoOut of curiosity, have you contacted their sales team to explain your position? I could see that going either way: maybe they consider just one sale to be more trouble than it's worth, or they could see that as yet more good will and [I would presume] making an evangelist in your peer group Also, depending on your tech stack, the IntelliJ and PyCharm Apache 2 releases are pretty strong. Obviously if you're in C++, Golang, Ruby, or Rust things are going to be harder without the full JetBrains tooling
