Otherwise, someone who doesn't understand the code will be asked to make modifications and you, the original author, will be called back in to rescue the thing when it has turned into a dilapidated mess. The problem the OP is having is not failing to please his boss, but working for a boss that isn't technical and has no idea what is happening. Those bosses are generally terrible for your career and if you have one, you should just quit.
